About this worksheet

The human body works because many systems run at the same time. Once students can name those systems and say what each one does, the rest of their elementary life-science vocabulary clicks into place. This worksheet covers six systems that come up in every grades 3-5 curriculum: skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous.

Section A gives 10 short clues. Each clue describes what one system is doing in a specific everyday situation — bones protect the brain, the heart pumps red liquid through tubes, the brain sends instructions away from a hot stove. Students write the body system that does the job. Section B drops to the organ level and asks students to name the heart, the lungs, the brain, an organ that breaks down food, the tubes that carry blood away from the heart, and the joints where bones meet.

The reference box at the top of page 1 names each of the six systems with a single-line job summary at the system level. It deliberately does not name any specific organ that students must recall in Section B, so the assessed items measure independent recall rather than copying from the reference. Page 3 is a compact one-column answer key for fast self-check or aide spot-check.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and have students name one body system they used to walk into the room.

Have students complete Section A independently as a system-matching warm-up.

Read item 6 together and discuss how the nervous system can react in less than a second.

Have students finish Section B and check answers against the page 3 key.

Pair with the Plant Life Cycle Worksheet or the Food Chain Worksheet to keep life science going.
