Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

This worksheet is an original science reading passage about how cranberries grow. It explains the low vines and the sandy bogs they grow in, how bees help the flowers become berries, and how farmers flood a bog so the berries float for the wet harvest.

Page 2 has four multiple-choice questions, one of them about the order of the steps in a wet harvest, and two questions to answer in a complete sentence, one of which asks students to explain why a flooded bog does not mean cranberries grow underwater. Page 3 is the answer key.

It pairs well with a bowl of fresh cranberries: drop a few in water and watch them float.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the passage aloud together, or have students read it on their own. In grade 2, reading it aloud works best: it uses words such as pollen, peat and booms.

Answer the multiple-choice questions in Section A.

Answer the two questions in Section B in complete sentences.

Check every answer against page 3.
