About this worksheet
When winter comes and food grows scarce, animals survive in different ways. Hibernation is a deep sleep-like state in which an animal slows its body to save energy and stays in one place, while migration is traveling to another place to find food, warmth, or a place to raise young. This worksheet helps students tell the two strategies apart, an important idea in the study of animal behavior.
Section A describes eight animals (a black bear sleeping in its den; geese flying south) and asks students to label each behavior hibernation or migration. The reference box teaches the idea with a chipmunk and arctic terns, examples not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define hibernation and migration, explain why some animals hibernate, and name a migrating animal with a reason. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward understanding how animals adapt to the seasons and their environment.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and contrast the chipmunk that stays with the terns that travel.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘does it stay and sleep, or travel away?’
Work Section B item 11 together: explain why hibernating saves energy in winter.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Seasons Worksheet or the Animal Adaptations Worksheet for a science mini-unit.
