Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Animals can be sorted into three groups by what they eat. A herbivore eats only plants, a carnivore eats only other animals, and an omnivore eats both plants and animals. This worksheet teaches students to classify animals by diet, which is a key part of understanding food chains.

Section A gives eight animals with a diet clue (rabbit eats clover; wolf hunts deer) and asks students to write herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore. The reference box teaches the idea with a cow, a lion, and a bear, animals not reused in the items.

Section B asks students what a herbivore eats, the difference between a carnivore and an omnivore, to name an omnivore and its foods, and why diet helps us understand a food chain. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill connects to food chains and webs.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and sort a few familiar animals by diet.

Complete Section A independently – have students use the diet clue in each item.

Work Section B item 11 together: name an omnivore and two foods it eats.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Food Chain Worksheet or the Decomposers Worksheet for a life-science mini-unit.
