About this worksheet
The greenhouse effect is the way certain gases in the air trap heat from the Sun and keep Earth warm. Sunlight passes through the atmosphere and warms the surface, and greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and water vapor trap part of that heat like a blanket. A natural greenhouse effect is needed for life, but too much greenhouse gas traps too much heat. This worksheet teaches the process clearly.
Section A on page 1 gives eight statements and asks students to decide whether each is true of the greenhouse effect or not. The reference box teaches the idea with a car parked in the sun, an analogy used only as a comparison, not as a Section A answer.
Section B on page 2 asks students to explain the greenhouse effect, name two greenhouse gases, say why some greenhouse effect is good, and compare it to a hot car. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward weather, climate, and Earth systems.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and discuss how a hot car traps heat like the atmosphere.
Complete Section A independently – have students check each claim against the reference box.
Work Section B item 11 together: explain the greenhouse effect in students’ own words.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B answers will vary.
Pair with the Weather Worksheet or the Natural Resources Worksheet.
