Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A food web shows how many food chains connect in a single habitat. Every living thing has a role: producers make their own food from sunlight, consumers eat other living things, and decomposers break down dead matter and return nutrients to the soil. This worksheet builds on the food chain by adding decomposers and the idea of a connected web.
Section A lists eight living things (a blade of grass, a rabbit, a mushroom, a hawk, earthworms, a fox) and asks students to classify each as producer, consumer, or decomposer. The set includes the often-missed decomposers and an omnivorous fox. The reference box defines all three roles plus herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore but names none of the eight Section A organisms.
Section B is short-answer. Students contrast a food chain and a food web, trace energy back to the Sun, explain why decomposers matter, and classify an omnivore. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward ecosystems and energy flow.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and have students name a producer, a consumer, and a decomposer.
Complete Section A independently – watch for the decomposers (mushroom, earthworms).
Discuss Section B item 4 (the fox as an omnivore) to reinforce the consumer types.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Food Chain Worksheet or the Ecosystems Worksheet for a life-science mini-unit.
