Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A food chain is the simplest way to show how energy moves through an ecosystem. This worksheet teaches the three role types — producer, consumer (herbivore or carnivore), decomposer — using familiar organisms students already know.
Section A asks students to classify 10 organisms: oak tree, rabbit, earthworm, wolf, mushroom, sunflower, deer, owl, soil bacteria, and seaweed. For consumers the answer key notes whether the animal is a herbivore or a carnivore so the teacher can extend the discussion.
Section B walks students through a four-link forest chain (oak leaf -> caterpillar -> robin -> fox) and asks them to name the producer, the primary consumer, and the top predator; trace where the chain’s energy originally comes from; predict what happens to the robins if all caterpillars disappear; and identify the decomposers that recycle a dead fox back into the soil. The reference box at the top of page 1 explains arrows (‘is eaten by’) and the loss of energy at each step. Page 3 is the answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and trace the example chain on the board (grass -> grasshopper -> frog -> snake -> hawk).
Work Section A independently and pause to discuss item 3 (earthworm) and item 9 (bacteria) as decomposers, since students often miscategorize them.
Move to Section B and work item 11 (the producer) together; let students complete the rest independently.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the Animal Habitats Worksheet to connect feeding relationships back to habitats.
