The Food Chain Lesson

Teach students about the food chain and animal eating habits with this printable science lesson. Covers the definitions of herbivores (plant eaters), carnivores (meat eaters), and omnivores (both), with familiar examples for each. Explains how the food chain connects all living things from producers like plants to consumers at every level, including how plankton supports ocean food chains. Also covers animal dental anatomy as an adaptation for diet. Includes comprehension questions and answer key.

Lesson Overview

Herbivores, Carnivores, Omnivores, and the Food Chain

The lesson defines the three main categories of animal eaters and gives concrete examples students will recognize — deer and rabbits as herbivores, lions and wolves as carnivores, bears and humans as omnivores. It then explains how these roles connect in a food chain, from the sun and plants through plant-eaters to predators.

The four-page lesson pairs a reading passage with comprehension questions. Students learn how animal teeth and digestive systems are adapted to their diets, and how removing one link in a food chain affects the whole ecosystem. A complete answer key is included.

How to Use This Lesson

1. Read the lesson passage together or have students read silently (pages 1–2). Ask students to sort a list of familiar animals into herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore groups.

2. Discuss food chains. Have students trace a simple food chain (for example: grass → rabbit → fox) and identify the producer and consumers.

3. Assign the comprehension questions (page 3) independently. Review answers using the key on page 4.
