Erosion Worksheet
A printable earth-science worksheet for grades 3-5 that teaches the three connected processes that shape Earth’s surface: weathering breaks rock down, erosion moves the pieces, and deposition drops them in a new place. Students identify which agent (water, wind, ice, or gravity) is at work in four scenes, then classify four more scenes as weathering, erosion, or deposition. A complete answer key is included.

About this worksheet
Erosion is the topic where most kids think they know what’s happening but actually conflate three different processes. This worksheet untangles them: weathering is breaking, erosion is moving, deposition is dropping. Once that three-word frame clicks, scenes like a river carrying sand or a glacier scraping rock become much easier to classify – and students stop using erosion as a catch-all for everything outdoors.
Section A is split into two skills. Items 1-4 ask which AGENT is at work (water, wind, ice, gravity) in four scenes that include a river, a glacier, a landslide, and a desert dune. Items 5-8 switch to PROCESS classification – weathering, erosion, or deposition – using tree roots cracking a sidewalk, waves dropping shells, a stream washing mud, and sand building up at a river mouth. The mix forces students to apply both lenses to the same kind of evidence.
Section B opens up the reasoning on page 2. Students explain weathering vs erosion in their own words, list the four agents, describe what happens to material after erosion (deposition), and apply the three-process model to a beach. The reference box at the top of page 1 names the agents and processes but does not write any of the Section A scenes word-for-word, so the worksheet stays reference-independent. Page 3 is a compact answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box together; ask students to name a real example of each agent (water, wind, ice, gravity) before they start Section A.
Do Section A independently; review the difference between erosion and deposition as a class – they are easy to swap.
For Section B item 4, accept any answer that names deposition as the process that built the beach.
Pair with the Rocks and Minerals Worksheet to connect the cycle: rocks form, weather, erode, and deposit, then form new sedimentary rock.
Use as a pre-assessment before a field-trip to a local stream, beach, or cliff.
