About this worksheet
Ecosystems are the spine of upper-elementary life science: every later topic (food webs, biomes, conservation, biodiversity) rests on the producer-consumer-decomposer framework. This worksheet teaches that framework in one tight assessment so students can apply it cleanly to anything else they read later.
Section A is a classify task. Eight common organisms are listed: oak tree, rabbit, mushroom, hawk, earthworm, grass, deer, bacteria in soil. For each one, students write producer, consumer, or decomposer. The two decomposer items (mushroom and bacteria in soil) and the two non-tree producer (grass) are deliberate — they catch the common misconception that ‘producer = tree’ and ‘decomposer = bug’.
Section B opens up the discussion on page 2. Four short-response items ask students to explain where ecosystem energy starts, predict what happens if decomposers disappear, list a three-step energy chain from grass to wolf, and name a producer and consumer in an ecosystem the student has personally seen. The reference box at the top of page 1 teaches each of the three roles at concept level only, without naming any specific organism. Page 3 is a compact answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box together and have students say out loud what each role does in the energy chain.
Do Section A independently; flag the two-decomposer trap items (mushroom and bacteria) for class discussion.
Discuss Section B item 2 as a class — the no-decomposers thought experiment is a strong way to see why the role matters.
Pair with the Food Chain Worksheet or Plant Life Cycle Worksheet to keep life-science thinking going.
Use the worksheet as a pre-assessment for a schoolyard observation walk where students identify each role on the ground.
