About this worksheet
Earthquakes are a high-engagement topic in earth science because the science and the safety instructions tie together so naturally. This worksheet builds both halves in parallel: the vocabulary that explains what an earthquake IS (fault, focus, epicenter, seismograph, magnitude), and the practical drop-cover-hold-on action a student would actually take if the ground started shaking. Knowing one without the other leaves a gap.
Section A is split. Items 1-4 ask students to recall a vocabulary term that matches a short clue – useful for cementing the focus-vs-epicenter distinction that most kids mix up. Items 5-8 switch to SAFE / UNSAFE classification of four real-world actions (drop-cover-hold-on, run outside, get under a desk, stand near a tall bookshelf). The mix forces students to apply, not just label.
Section B opens up the reasoning on page 2. Students list the three drop-cover-hold-on steps, explain the focus/epicenter difference, identify plate movement as the cause, and compare a magnitude-4 quake to a magnitude-7 quake. The reference box at the top of page 1 teaches each term but never writes the Section A clues word-for-word, so the worksheet stays reference-independent. Page 3 is a compact answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box together; have the class practice the drop-cover-hold-on motion once before they start Section A.
Do Section A independently; review the focus-vs-epicenter pair as a class, since it is the most-missed distinction.
For Section B item 4, accept any reasoning that connects larger magnitude to stronger shaking.
