Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Every ecosystem has producers that make their own food, consumers that eat other living things, and decomposers that break down dead plants and animals into nutrients for the soil. Decomposers – fungi, bacteria, and earthworms – are nature’s recyclers. This worksheet teaches students to recognize the decomposer role and tell it apart from producers and consumers.

Section A gives eight living things (an oak tree; a worm eating dead leaves) and asks students to write producer, consumer, or decomposer. The reference box teaches the three roles with a mushroom-on-a-log and a bacteria example using organisms different from the items.

Section B asks students what decomposers do, to name two decomposers, why they are called recyclers, and what would happen to a forest without them. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill deepens the food-chain and ecosystems strand.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and sort a few classroom examples into the three roles.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘does it make food, eat, or break down the dead?’

Work Section B item 9 together: describe the decomposer’s job in an ecosystem.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Food Chain Worksheet or the Ecosystems Worksheet for a life-science mini-unit.
