Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Earth is always spinning, or rotating, making one full turn every 24 hours. The side facing the Sun has daytime and the side facing away has nighttime. The Sun does not actually move across the sky – it only looks that way because we are moving as Earth turns. This worksheet teaches the rotation cause and clears up two common misconceptions.
Section A gives eight true/false statements, mixing the correct rotation explanation with errors (the Sun moves around Earth; day and night come from tilt and seasons; Earth stops spinning at night). Students decide true or false. The reference box explains the cause but phrases statements differently.
Section B is short-answer. Students name the cause of day and night, recall the 24-hour spin, explain why the Sun seems to move, and reason about the opposite side of Earth. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is distinct from the seasons (tilt) and pairs with moon phases.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and spin a globe next to a lamp to show day and night.
Complete Section A independently – have students check each statement against the reference.
Discuss the false statements (the Sun does not orbit Earth; this is not the seasons; Earth never stops spinning).
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Seasons Worksheet or the Solar System Worksheet for an earth-and-space mini-unit.
