About this worksheet
Insects change as they grow, and they do it in one of two ways. In complete metamorphosis an insect passes through four stages – egg, larva, pupa, and adult – and the larva looks nothing like the adult. In incomplete metamorphosis there are only three stages – egg, nymph, and adult – and the nymph already looks like a small wingless adult. This worksheet helps students tell the two patterns apart, a key idea in life science.
Section A gives eight descriptions (a butterfly forming a chrysalis; a grasshopper hatching as a nymph) and asks students to label each complete or incomplete metamorphosis. The answer cue is built into every description, so students reason from the number of stages rather than memorizing insect lists. The reference box teaches the idea with a moth and a cricket, examples not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define complete metamorphosis, compare a nymph with a larva, explain why incomplete metamorphosis has one fewer stage, and list the four stages in order. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward understanding insect life cycles and how living things grow and change.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and count the stages of the moth and the cricket together.
Complete Section A independently – have students look for a pupa (complete) or a nymph (incomplete).
Work Section B item 11 together: explain why incomplete metamorphosis skips a stage.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Animal Life Cycles Worksheet or the Insects Worksheet for a life-science mini-unit.
