Name That Cloud!
Clouds are made of millions of tiny water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Scientists classify clouds by their shape and the altitude at which they form. Learning to identify cloud types helps students understand and predict weather patterns.
The three basic cloud types are cumulus, cirrus, and stratus. Cumulus clouds are puffy and white with flat bases, forming on warm, sunny days. Cirrus clouds are wispy and thin, made of ice crystals high above 20,000 feet — they often signal a change in weather within 24 hours. Stratus clouds form in flat, gray layers low in the sky and are associated with drizzle or overcast conditions.
Prefixes indicate cloud altitude. The prefix “cirro-” means high clouds (above 20,000 feet), “alto-” means middle-level clouds (8,000–20,000 feet), and “nimbo-” or “-nimbus” indicates a rain-producing cloud. Cumulonimbus clouds, sometimes called thunderheads, are the tall, anvil-shaped clouds that produce thunderstorms, heavy rain, and sometimes tornadoes.
Weather forecasters use cloud observations along with radar and satellite data to predict weather. A sky full of cirrus clouds may mean rain in a day or two. Cumulonimbus clouds signal that severe weather could arrive within hours. Understanding cloud types is one of the oldest and most practical skills in weather observation.
