Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Clouds are made of tiny drops of water or ice in the sky. Three common kinds are cumulus (puffy and white), stratus (flat gray layers), and cirrus (thin and wispy, high up). When water in clouds gets heavy it falls as precipitation: rain (liquid), snow (ice crystals), sleet (frozen pellets), or hail (balls of ice). This worksheet teaches both clouds and precipitation.

Section A gives eight clues (puffy white clouds; liquid drops falling; thin wispy ice clouds) and asks students to name the cloud or precipitation type. Because the clues describe traits rather than repeating the reference word for word, students reason from the description. The reference box defines all three cloud types and all four precipitation types.

Section B is short-answer. Students say what clouds are made of, define precipitation, explain what decides rain versus snow, and contrast sleet and hail. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill deepens weather understanding and connects to the water cycle.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and look out the window to name the clouds if possible.

Complete Section A independently – have students match each clue to a cloud or precipitation type.

Discuss Section B item 4 (sleet versus hail) to clarify the two ice forms.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Weather Worksheet or the Water Cycle Worksheet for an earth-science mini-unit.
