Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Matter can change between solid, liquid, and gas when heat is added or removed. Melting is solid to liquid, freezing is liquid to solid, evaporation is liquid to gas, and condensation is gas to liquid. The matter stays the same stuff – only its form changes. This worksheet teaches students to name each change from a real-life scenario.

Section A gives eight scenarios (a puddle dries in the sun; water freezes into ice) and asks students to name the change. The reference box teaches the four changes with an ice-cube-melting and a breath-on-a-mirror example using scenarios different from the items.

Section B asks students which changes need added heat, the difference between melting and freezing, the name for gas cooling to liquid, and whether melted ice is the same stuff. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill extends the states-of-matter strand to the transitions between states.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and sketch the solid-liquid-gas arrows with melt/freeze/evaporate/condense.

Complete Section A independently – have students name the starting and ending form first.

Work Section B item 9 together: list the changes that need added heat.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the States of Matter Worksheet or the Water Cycle Worksheet for a matter mini-unit.
