Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are one of the three main nutrients the body needs for energy, along with proteins and fats. They are found in a wide range of foods, including bread, pasta, rice, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.
The body breaks carbohydrates down into glucose, a simple sugar that cells use as their primary source of fuel. Glucose travels through the bloodstream to muscles, the brain, and other organs, powering everything from physical movement to thinking.
There are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates, found in foods like candy and soda, are broken down quickly and cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. Complex carbohydrates, found in whole grains and vegetables, digest more slowly and provide a steady release of energy.
Fiber is a special type of complex carbohydrate that the body cannot fully digest. It passes through the digestive system largely intact, helping to keep the intestines healthy and making people feel full longer. Fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains are all good sources of fiber.
Choosing the right carbohydrates is important for overall health. Nutritionists recommend focusing on complex carbohydrates and fiber-rich foods rather than sugary, processed options. A balanced diet with healthy carbohydrates provides lasting energy and supports long-term well-being.
