About this worksheet
Animals use clever adaptations to stay safe. Camouflage uses colors or patterns to help an animal blend into its surroundings so it is hard to see, while mimicry makes one animal look like another animal or a scary object to fool its enemies. This worksheet helps students tell these two survival tricks apart, a key idea in the study of adaptations.
Section A gives eight examples (an arctic fox white against the snow; a hoverfly striped like a wasp) and asks students to label each camouflage or mimicry. The reference box teaches the idea with a polar bear and an owl butterfly, examples not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define camouflage and mimicry, explain how camouflage helps an animal survive, and decide whether a harmless snake copying a poisonous one is camouflage or mimicry. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward understanding adaptations and how animals avoid predators.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask how the polar bear and the owl butterfly each stay safe.
