Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Botany is the study of plants, and it is large enough to be divided into branches. This worksheet is about the field itself rather than about one plant part: what plant anatomy, plant ecology, plant taxonomy and horticulture each study, and what a botanist actually does.

The passage on page 1 covers the cellulose cell wall that an animal cell does not have, what xylem and phloem each carry and in which direction, what the root system does, how a leaf makes food, and how plants came to be named. Theophrastus described about 500 plants by their stems, leaves and flowers; in the 1700s Linnaeus replaced that with the two-part Latin naming system still in use, which is why more than 300,000 identified species can be discussed without confusion.

Page 2 has fifteen questions in three forms: multiple choice, true or false, and fill in the missing word. Page 3 is a complete answer key with a short reason recorded beside every false statement.

For the plant parts themselves, use the Parts of a Plant Worksheet. For how a plant makes its food, use the Photosynthesis Worksheet. For how plants are grouped, see the Vascular and Nonvascular Plants Worksheet.

How to Use This Lesson

Answer the four multiple-choice questions in Section A.

Mark each Section B statement TRUE or FALSE, and be ready to say why.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or grading.

Pair with the Parts of a Plant Worksheet for the anatomy in detail.
