Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A biome is a large region of Earth with a certain climate and the living things suited to it. Five common biomes are the desert (hot and dry), the rainforest (warm and rainy), the tundra (cold and treeless), the grassland (covered in grasses), and the ocean (the largest biome). This worksheet helps students connect a biome’s climate to the plants and animals that live there.
Section A on page 1 gives eight clues – some describing the climate, some describing an animal’s special feature – and asks students to name the biome. The reference box teaches the idea with the deciduous forest and a deer, which are not reused in any item.
Section B on page 2 asks students what a biome is, what makes biomes different, why a cactus suits the desert, and to match an animal to a biome. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward ecosystems and adaptations.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and describe the five biomes’ climates.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘what is the climate, and what lives there?’
Work Section B item 11 together: explain why a cactus suits the desert.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B item 12 answers will vary.
Pair with the Ecosystems Worksheet or the Adaptations Worksheet.
