Animal Tags

Wildlife biologists use a variety of tagging and tracking methods to study animals in the wild. By attaching tags, bands, or electronic devices to animals, scientists can gather data on migration routes, home ranges, population sizes, feeding habits, and the effects of habitat changes. This information is essential for making decisions about conservation, wildlife management, and protecting endangered species.

Bird banding is one of the oldest wildlife tracking methods. A small, lightweight metal or plastic band is attached to a bird’s leg with a unique identification number. If the bird is recaptured or found dead, scientists can match the number to records of where and when the bird was originally banded. Bird banding has revealed the extraordinary distances that migratory birds travel — some Arctic terns banded in the Northern Hemisphere have been recovered in Antarctica, a round trip of over 44,000 miles.

Radio telemetry uses small radio transmitters attached to animals — often as collars for large mammals. A receiver with a directional antenna can detect the signal from the transmitter, allowing researchers to locate the animal from a distance. GPS satellite collars take this further by recording the animal’s precise location automatically at regular intervals and transmitting the data to researchers via satellite. GPS collars have revealed surprising details about animal movement, including that mountain lions in suburban areas travel through human neighborhoods at night.

Scientists also use visual tags, paint marks, and photographic identification to track individual animals. Whale researchers identify individual humpback whales by the unique patterns on their tail flukes, photographed when the whale dives. Cheetahs are identified by their distinctive spot patterns. Citizen science programs allow ordinary people to report tagged or banded animals they encounter, greatly expanding the data collected by professional researchers and helping scientists track animals across entire continents.
