About this worksheet
Every animal goes through a life cycle, but they grow up in different ways. In complete metamorphosis the animal changes shape through egg, larva, pupa, and adult; in incomplete metamorphosis it goes egg, nymph, adult with no pupa; and in a direct life cycle the young look like small adults and just grow bigger. This worksheet teaches the stages and the three patterns.
Section A describes eight stages (a caterpillar growing, a resting chrysalis, a tiny adult-like grasshopper, a frog ready to lay eggs) and asks students to name the stage: egg, larva, pupa, nymph, or adult. The reference box defines the three life-cycle types and the stages but names none of the Section A animals.
Section B is short-answer. Students define a life cycle, contrast complete and incomplete metamorphosis, order the butterfly’s four stages, and classify a kitten’s direct growth. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill complements the plant life cycle and animal classification.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and trace a butterfly’s four stages together.
Complete Section A independently – have students decide the stage from the description.
Work Section B item 3 together: order egg, larva, pupa, adult.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Plant Life Cycle Worksheet or the Animal Classification Worksheet for a life-science mini-unit.
