About this worksheet
A habitat is the place where an animal lives and finds food, water, shelter, and space. This worksheet introduces the five common habitat types — forest, desert, ocean, grassland, and polar — and uses 12 well-known animals to make the categories memorable.
Section A asks students to name the most likely habitat for each animal. Polar bear, shark, lion, tree frog, penguin, kangaroo, octopus, rattlesnake, monkey, walrus, giraffe, and scorpion give a wide enough mix to surface habitat misconceptions (a frog is not always pond water; a kangaroo is not in the rainforest).
Section B raises the difficulty by asking about adaptations. Students decide which habitat suits an animal with thick fur and body fat, which habitat fits an animal that stores water and avoids midday heat, and what happens to animals when their habitat is destroyed. The reference box at the top of page 1 lays out each habitat with example species. Page 3 is the answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and have students name one animal that lives near their school.
Work Section A independently — pause briefly to discuss any animal a student wants to defend (e.g. some tree frogs do live in temperate forests, not only rainforests).
Move to Section B and discuss adaptations as a class before students write.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the Food Chain Worksheet to connect habitats to feeding relationships.
