About this worksheet

Scientists sort animals with backbones into five main groups by the traits they share: mammals have fur and feed milk, birds have feathers, fish have gills and scales, reptiles have dry scaly skin, and amphibians have moist skin and a water-to-land life. This worksheet gives students a clear set of tests so they can place a new animal into the right group with confidence.

Section A lists eight animals (frog, eagle, dolphin, snake, salmon, bat, turtle, penguin) and asks students to write the group each belongs to. The set is chosen to test real understanding rather than guessing: a dolphin and a bat are mammals even though one swims and one flies, a penguin is a bird that does not fly, and a frog is an amphibian rather than a reptile. The reference box teaches the five groups by trait but names none of these eight animals.

Section B opens up reasoning on page 2. Students define vertebrate and list the five groups, name two mammal traits, explain why a dolphin is a mammal and not a fish, and classify an animal of their own choosing with a supporting trait. Page 3 is a complete answer key.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box together and have students name one example of each group before starting Section A.

Complete Section A independently; review the tricky items (dolphin, bat, penguin) as a class.

Discuss Section B item 3 (why a dolphin is a mammal) to reinforce that habitat does not decide the group.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Animal Habitats Worksheet or the Food Chain Worksheet for a life-science mini-unit.
