Animal Adaptations Worksheet

A printable life-science worksheet for grades 3-5 that teaches the two kinds of animal adaptations – physical features the animal is born with and behaviors the animal does – and how each one helps an animal survive. Students classify eight animal examples, then answer four short-response items including a camouflage prompt. A complete answer key is included.

About this worksheet

Animal adaptations are one of the most fun parts of life science to teach because the examples are vivid and weird. This worksheet pins down a single big idea kids can carry forward: if it is something the animal HAS, it is physical; if it is something the animal DOES, it is behavioral. With that rule in hand, every new adaptation a student meets can be sorted in seconds.

Section A is a classify task. Eight famous animal adaptations (camel’s hump, geese flying south, fox winter fur, bear hibernation, giraffe’s long neck, wolves hunting in a pack, skunk spray, polar bear’s white fur) are listed; students write whether each one is physical or behavioral. The mix balances four of each, including one trickier pair (skunk spray IS a behavior even though it uses a body part; the white fur of a polar bear is physical even though it serves the same hiding purpose as a behavior).

Section B opens up the discussion on page 2. Students define adaptation, explain the physical/behavioral split in their own words, classify a frog’s color-matching skin (physical camouflage), and give one example from an animal in their own backyard. The reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the has-vs-does rule but never names any of the eight Section A animals. Page 3 is a compact answer key.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box together; have students give one quick has/does example before they start Section A.

Do Section A independently; review the trickier items (skunk spray, polar bear fur) as a class.

For Section B item 4, share local-animal examples in pairs so students hear several adaptations beyond their own.

Pair with the Animal Habitats Worksheet or the Food Chain Worksheet to tie adaptation to ecosystem.

Use as a pre-assessment before a research project on one specific animal’s adaptations.
