About this worksheet
An acid is a substance that tastes sour and has a pH below 7, while a base often tastes bitter and feels slippery and has a pH above 7; pure water sits neutral at 7. This worksheet teaches students to recognize common acids and bases and to test them safely with indicators rather than taste or touch.
Section A gives eight substances (Lemon juice, which tastes sour; Soap, which feels slippery) and asks students to label each acid or base. The reference box teaches the idea with tomato juice and an antacid tablet, examples not reused in the items, and stresses never tasting an unknown substance.
Section B asks students to describe acids and bases, name the neutral pH, explain the safety rule, and tell what blue litmus does in an acid. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward understanding the pH scale and chemical properties.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and emphasize the safety rule: never taste or touch to test.
Complete Section A independently – have students recall whether each substance is sour or slippery.
Work Section B item 11 together: explain why tasting an unknown substance is dangerous.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Mixtures and Solutions Worksheet or the Properties of Materials Worksheet for a chemistry mini-unit.
