What Is a Weather Front?

Have you ever wondered what all those symbols are on a weather map? There are curved lines with triangles or circles on them drawn across different areas of the map. These lines mark fronts — the boundaries between large air masses that are moving across the Earth. When two different air masses meet, a front is formed, and fronts almost always bring changes in the weather.

Giant air masses form all over the Earth. The sun heats up the ocean near the equator, causing warm, moist air to rise. As that warm air moves away from the equator, it cools and sinks. Cold air is denser and drier than warm air. When a cold air mass meets a warm air mass, neither one simply stops — one pushes into or under the other. That collision zone is where a weather front forms.

A cold front is made of cold, dense air that is moving into a warmer area. On weather maps, cold fronts are shown as blue lines with small triangles pointing in the direction the front is moving. Because cold air is heavy, it slides under the warm air and forces it upward rapidly. This fast rise of warm air often produces powerful thunderstorms, heavy rain, or even hail. After a cold front passes, temperatures usually drop quickly and the sky clears.

Types of Weather Fronts

A warm front forms when a mass of warm air moves into an area where cooler air is present. Warm fronts are shown on weather maps as red lines with small semicircles pointing in the direction of movement. Unlike cold fronts, warm fronts advance more slowly. The warm air gradually rises over the cooler air, often producing steady rain, drizzle, or fog that can last for several days before the front moves through.

A stationary front forms when two air masses meet but neither one has enough force to push the other out of the way. The front stays in place, sometimes for days. Stationary fronts are shown on maps with alternating blue triangles and red semicircles on opposite sides of the line. They often produce cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle over a wide area until wind patterns shift and one air mass finally moves.

An occluded front forms when a fast-moving cold front catches up to a slower warm front and pushes the warm air completely off the ground. This type of front often brings complex weather — a mix of clouds, precipitation, and changing temperatures. After an occluded front passes, temperatures usually become more stable and the storm activity begins to weaken. Understanding all four types of fronts helps meteorologists predict what kind of weather is coming next.
