About this worksheet
Nonfiction books give readers tools to find information without reading every word – a table of contents, headings and subheadings, captions, and an index. This worksheet teaches students which tool fits which job, so they can locate information quickly instead of reading a whole book to answer one question.
Section A gives eight tasks (to learn what a photo shows, to find where Chapter 3 begins, to look up the page that mentions volcanoes) and asks students to name the feature they would use: table of contents, heading, caption, or index. The set uses each feature twice so students learn the role of each. The reference box defines all four features with its own examples not reused in any task.
Section B asks students to contrast a table of contents and an index, explain how a heading helps before reading, say why captions matter with photographs, and choose the right feature to find a specific page. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill makes students efficient readers of textbooks and reference books.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point to the table of contents, a heading, a caption, and the index in a real nonfiction book.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask which tool fits each job.
Discuss Section B item 1 (table of contents vs index) to clarify front-of-book vs back-of-book.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
