About this worksheet
A glossary is an alphabetical list of important words and their meanings, usually found at the back of a book, and it works like a small dictionary for that book. This worksheet gives students a real eight-entry glossary from a book about the moon and has them look words up, read meanings, and use alphabetical order.
The reference box and the glossary are on page 1. Section A on page 2 gives eight questions, and students use the glossary to find meanings and locate words in ABC order. The reference box teaches what a glossary is, while the answers come from the glossary itself.
Section B on page 3 asks students to define a glossary, explain how to find a word, say why it is alphabetical, and place a new word in order. Page 4 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on the table of contents, index, and other text features.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point out the alphabetical order in the glossary.
Complete Section A on page 2 using the glossary.
Discuss how a glossary helps a reader who meets a new word.
Use the answer key on page 4 for self-check.
