Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject, shown through word choice. A tone shift happens when that attitude changes within a single text – a passage may begin hopeful and turn fearful. This worksheet teaches students to spot a shift, often marked by signal words such as but, however, suddenly, and until, and to name the new tone.
Section A on page 1 gives eight short sentence pairs – a setup and a shift – and asks students to name the tone of the second part (for example, a happy picnic that turns uneasy when clouds roll in). The reference box defines tone and tone shift with examples different from the eight Section A items.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define tone and tone shift, list signal words, and write their own shifting pair. Page 3 is a complete answer key with acceptable synonyms noted. The skill deepens the Author’s Tone and Mood vs. Tone worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and underline the signal words in one example.
Complete Section A independently, naming the tone after each shift.
Discuss Section B item 12 (writing a happy-to-worried shift) and share examples.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Author’s Tone Worksheet or the Mood vs. Tone Worksheet.
