Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, at Shadwell plantation in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was raised in a wealthy planter family and received an exceptional education. At the College of William and Mary, he studied law under the prominent attorney George Wythe and became one of the most learned men in colonial America. He read widely in philosophy, science, architecture, and music, and spoke several languages. He was a skilled violinist, an accomplished architect, and a passionate gardener. Jefferson’s broad intellectual curiosity would shape his entire life and career.
Jefferson was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1769 and quickly emerged as a leading voice for colonial rights. His pamphlet A Summary View of the Rights of British America (1774) argued eloquently that Parliament had no authority over the colonies. When the Second Continental Congress met in 1776, Jefferson was chosen to draft the Declaration of Independence. Working for about two weeks, he produced one of the most celebrated documents in human history. Its opening lines — ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights’ — became a cornerstone of democratic thought worldwide.
Jefferson served as Governor of Virginia during the Revolutionary War and later as Minister to France, where he witnessed the early stirrings of the French Revolution. As Secretary of State under President Washington, he clashed repeatedly with Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton over the proper role of the federal government. Jefferson believed in limited federal power and the primacy of states’ rights, while Hamilton favored a strong central government. These disagreements helped form the first American political parties: Jefferson’s Democratic-Republicans and Hamilton’s Federalists.
Jefferson served as the second Vice President under John Adams and then won the presidency himself in the election of 1800 — a bitter contest that was ultimately decided by the House of Representatives. His presidency (1801–1809) was defined by the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, in which he bought 828,000 square miles of territory from France, nearly doubling the size of the United States. He commissioned the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the new territory. He also worked to reduce the federal debt and eliminate the national bank.
Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826 — the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence — within hours of his old friend and rival John Adams. He was 83 years old. Jefferson is revered as one of America’s greatest thinkers and founding leaders. However, his legacy is also complicated: he enslaved more than 600 people over his lifetime and never freed them during his life, despite his public writings on liberty and equality. Jefferson remains one of history’s most complex and debated figures — a man whose ideals of freedom were profound but whose personal actions fell far short of them.
