Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

This is the challenge (grades 5-6) level in a leveled set of three The Water Cycle reading worksheets. All three share the same nonfiction topic, so a teacher can hand every reader in the room the same subject at the right level. The Basic version (grades 1-2) and the Standard version (grades 3-4) cover how water moves through the water cycle at a different reading level.

The worksheet asks students to think like close readers: four comprehension and vocabulary questions, an inference organizer with two text-evidence prompts, a vocabulary-in-context item, a cause-and-effect chain, and a constructed response that must cite at least two details from the passage.

The final page is a complete Teacher Answer Key. Objective items show the exact answer; the inference, cause-and-effect, and constructed-response items show concise sample responses and the evidence a strong answer would cite.

How to Use This Lesson

Review the inference reference box and the example before reading.

Have students read the passage independently and annotate evidence.

Complete the comprehension and cause-and-effect sections independently.

Use the inference and written-response sections for a close-reading discussion; require text evidence.

Use the answer key to compare responses against the sample evidence, and assign the Basic or Standard version as needed.
