Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Summarizing is one of the most transferable reading skills: once students learn to strip a text down to its most important ideas and restate them briefly, they can apply that skill to every content area. This worksheet uses an original informational passage about the water cycle — a topic familiar enough that students can focus on the skill, not on decoding unfamiliar content.

A reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the two-part definition of a summary (most important ideas, in your own words) and illustrates it with a recipe example that is completely separate from the assessed passage. Section A asks students to record one key detail per step of the water cycle, building a scaffold they can use when writing the full summary in Section B.

Section B pushes students past recall into judgment: the second question asks them to decide whether a specific detail belongs in a summary and explain why. This mirrors the kind of thinking students encounter in standardized reading assessments.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and discuss: what makes a detail ‘key’ vs. minor?

Read the water cycle passage together or have students read independently.

Complete Section A as a class or in pairs, recording one detail per step.

Use Section A notes as a scaffold when writing the Section B summary.

Discuss the second Section B question as a class: why do we leave small details out?
