What this assessment checks
Summarizing tested three ways, including the one students find hardest – deciding what to leave out:
- Choosing the best summary from several accurate options
- Spotting a summary that is too long, too short, or wrong
- Writing a summary in a fixed number of sentences
How to use it
Give it after summarizing has been taught and practiced on whole texts. The written items cap the number of sentences on purpose: a summary with no length limit is a retelling.
Reading the results
The commonest error is retelling: accurate, complete, and far too long. Score the written answers against the sentence limit first and accuracy second — a student who writes three good sentences when asked for one has not learned to summarize, even though nothing they wrote is wrong.
