About this worksheet
Subtext is what a character really means underneath the words that character actually says. This worksheet teaches students to read the gap between speech and behavior, and to name the clues that reveal it.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box defines subtext, text, imply, infer, contradiction, tone, gesture, and motive. Section A has eight clues to match to the correct term. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions.
Page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for every item. The worksheet pairs well with the Mood vs Tone and Character Traits worksheets.
