About this worksheet
Identifying story elements is a foundational reading-comprehension skill that helps students build a mental map of a narrative and articulate what makes a story work. This worksheet pairs an original short story with two assessed tasks: a four-item element-identification task (characters, setting, problem, solution) and a three-question short-response section that asks students to support their answers with details from the passage.
A reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the four elements with a familiar folktale example (Goldilocks and the Three Bears) so the assessed passage stays fresh – the events, characters, and setting of the assessed passage do not appear in the reference example.
The final page is a complete answer key showing the four story elements for the passage and brief one-sentence sample answers for the short-response items, organized in a compact two-column grid for quick spot-checking.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and discuss the four elements using the Goldilocks example.
Read ‘The Lost Whistle’ passage aloud once, then have students reread it silently and circle each character’s name and any words that show the setting.
Have students complete Section A independently; this is fact retrieval directly from the passage.
Use Section B as guided practice – model how to support an answer with one passage detail on item 1, then let students work independently on items 2-3.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
