Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

The main idea is what a text is mostly about. Sometimes it is stated – written directly in one sentence – and sometimes it is implied, so the reader must put the details together to figure it out. This worksheet builds the judgment students need to find a main idea whether or not the author writes it down.

Section A gives eight short two-sentence texts (Recess is the best part of my day. We run and play; She grabbed her glove, bat, and cap and ran outside) and asks students to label the main idea stated or implied. The reference box teaches the idea with a soccer example not reused in the items.

Section B asks students to define stated and implied main ideas, infer the implied main idea of one item, and explain how to find a main idea that is not stated. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward main idea, inference, and summarizing.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and contrast the stated soccer example with the implied one.

Complete Section A independently – have students underline a stated main-idea sentence, or write the implied one in the margin.

Work Section B item 11 together: state the implied main idea of the wet-streets text.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Main Idea with Short Passages Worksheet or the Inference with Short Passages Worksheet for a comprehension mini-unit.
