Reptiles Without Legs

Snakes are reptiles — cold-blooded, scaly animals that breathe air. They are found on every continent except Antarctica and in nearly every habitat on Earth, from deserts and rainforests to mountain slopes and ocean waters. There are more than 3,500 species of snakes, ranging in size from the tiny Barbados threadsnake, which is only about four inches long, to the reticulated python, which can grow to more than 20 feet and weigh over 300 pounds.

Snakes evolved from lizard ancestors that gradually lost their legs over millions of years. Despite being legless, snakes are highly mobile. They move using one of several methods depending on the species and terrain: sidewinding across sand, concertina movement through narrow passages, rectilinear crawling using belly scales, and lateral undulation — the familiar S-shaped slithering motion. A snake’s body consists almost entirely of ribs and vertebrae; some large pythons have more than 400 vertebrae, compared to 33 in a human spine.

Snakes are carnivores that eat a wide variety of prey: insects, frogs, lizards, birds, eggs, small mammals, and even other snakes. Because snakes have highly flexible jaws — the bones of the jaw are connected by elastic ligaments rather than a rigid joint — they can swallow prey much wider than their own heads. After a large meal, a snake may not need to eat again for weeks or even months. Snakes do not chew their food; they swallow it whole, and powerful digestive acids do the rest.

Senses, Venom, and Adaptation

Snakes have an extraordinary set of sensory adaptations. They have no external ears and cannot hear airborne sounds, but they can detect vibrations in the ground through their jaw bones. Their forked tongues collect scent particles from the air and ground, which are then analyzed by the Jacobson’s organ on the roof of their mouth — allowing snakes to “smell” their surroundings with great precision. Pit vipers and pythons have special heat-sensing organs called pit organs that detect infrared radiation from warm-bodied prey, allowing them to hunt effectively in total darkness.

About 600 of the world’s snake species are venomous, and roughly 200 are capable of causing serious harm to humans. Venomous snakes include cobras, mambas, rattlesnakes, and vipers. Venom is produced in modified salivary glands and delivered through hollow or grooved fangs. Some venoms attack the nervous system (neurotoxic), causing paralysis and respiratory failure; others attack the blood and tissue (hemotoxic), causing severe internal damage. However, most snakes are non-venomous and pose no danger to humans. Snakes rarely bite people unless they are handled or feel directly threatened.

Snakes play an important ecological role: they control populations of rodents and other small animals, preventing agricultural damage and the spread of disease. In turn, snakes are prey for hawks, owls, mongooses, and many other animals. Despite their reputation, snakes are often misunderstood. Most species are shy, secretive, and beneficial to their ecosystems. Many snake species around the world face threats from habitat loss, road mortality, and intentional killing by people who fear them. Conservation education about the ecological value of snakes is an important part of protecting these remarkable reptiles.
