Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Skimming and scanning are two fast ways to read. Skimming means reading quickly to get the general idea of a text, while scanning means moving your eyes over a text to find one specific piece of information such as a name, date, or key word. This worksheet helps students choose the right strategy for the job.

Section A gives eight reading tasks (Get the general idea of a chapter; Find a specific date in an article) and asks students to write skim or scan. The reference box teaches the idea with a recipe example, tasks not reused in the items.

Section B asks students to define skimming and scanning, choose a strategy for finding a name in a yearbook, and name a time skimming beats reading every word. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds efficient reading and study habits.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and model skimming a page, then scanning it for one word.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘general idea, or one specific fact?’

Work Section B item 11 together: decide whether to skim or scan a yearbook for a name.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Monitoring Your Comprehension Worksheet or the Using Headings and Captions Worksheet for a reading-strategy mini-unit.
