Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

This is the standard (grade 1) level in a leveled set of three sight words worksheets. Each level teaches a different real Dolch list, so a teacher can hand every reader in the room the same kind of practice at the right level. This one covers the Dolch Primer list: he, she, was, are, they, have, like, this, with, saw.

The worksheet moves through four kinds of practice. Students first read the words on flash-style cards, then trace a gray model of four of the words and write each one on the line, then circle every copy of one target word hidden in a grid of similar words. Finally they read a short original story that features the sight words from this level in real sentences (with a few simple supporting words so it reads naturally), so the practice pays off right away in real reading.

The last page is a complete Teacher Answer Key. It gives the exact answers, the number of times the target word appears in the grid, and concise sample responses for the open items, so an aide or parent can check a pupil’s work quickly.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the word bank aloud together, then have students read the cards in Section A on their own.

Model tracing the first word, reminding students to start each letter at the top.

Have students complete the find-and-circle grid independently and count how many they found.

Read the story once aloud, then have students reread it and answer the questions.

Use the answer key for self-check, and hand stronger or emerging readers a different level of this set.
