Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Setting is more than just a backdrop. Setting tells students where and when a story is happening and what feeling that place creates — and strong readers use setting details to predict what a character is likely to do next. This worksheet trains all three of those skills in a single short reading assessment.

Section A asks students to extract five specific setting facts from a 115-word original passage about Maya opening her grandmother’s attic for the first time in years. Where is the scene? What time of day? What season + holiday clue? What atmosphere word fits? Quote one sensory detail (something Maya sees, hears, smells, or touches). Each question maps to a clearly findable phrase in the passage.

Section B raises the difficulty with three short-response items: name one way the attic setting affects what Maya is likely to do next, explain how the atmosphere would shift if the same events happened in a school cafeteria at noon instead, and explain why writers often spend two paragraphs on setting before any action happens. The reference box at the top of page 1 defines setting at the concept level only — where + when + atmosphere — and reminds students that atmosphere is built from sensory details. Page 3 is a compact one-column answer key.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and have students name a setting from a book they recently read, breaking it into where + when + atmosphere.

Read the passage aloud once for flow.

Have students complete Section A independently as the extraction core of the worksheet.

Discuss Section B item 2 together — what a busy cafeteria scene would feel like — to highlight how setting changes everything.

Pair with the Plot Structure Worksheet or the Dialogue Analysis Worksheet to keep narrative-analysis skills going.
