About this worksheet
Sequencing is a foundational reading-comprehension skill that helps students build mental timelines of a story and notice the cause-and-effect chains within a narrative. This worksheet pairs an original short story with two assessed tasks: a seven-event ordering task and a three-question short-response section that asks students to articulate what came first, what came right after, and what came last.
A reference box at the top of page 1 teaches students to watch for time-order signal words like ‘first,’ ‘next,’ ‘then,’ ‘after that,’ and ‘finally’ – the same kinds of words that appear in the passage so students can practice using textual evidence to defend their ordering.
The final page is a complete answer key showing both the correct order for the seven scrambled events and brief one-sentence answers for the short-response prompts, organized in a compact two-column grid for quick spot-checking.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and review the time-order signal words.
Read ‘The Sunflower’ passage aloud once, then have students reread it silently and underline every signal word they find.
Have students complete Section A independently; if they get stuck, point them back to the signal words they underlined.
Use Section B as guided practice – model how to find textual evidence on item 1, then let students work independently on items 2-3.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
