About this worksheet
Satire is writing that uses humor, exaggeration, and irony to criticize or make fun of a fault in people or society. The goal is not just to be funny; it is to make readers notice a problem and think about it. This worksheet uses an original passage about the town of Bustleburg, where people are obsessed with looking busy, to teach how satire works.
The reference box and the passage are on page 1. Section A on page 2 gives eight questions about the passage, and students identify the target and the techniques. The reference box teaches satire with a different example, so the questions stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 3 asks students to define satire, contrast it with a story that is just funny, name the real habit it pokes fun at, and explain why a writer uses humor instead of a direct complaint. Page 4 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on irony, tone, and persuasive techniques.
