Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A round character is complex and fully developed, shown with many traits and feelings, and often grows or changes; a flat character is simple, shown with only one or two traits, and stays the same. Both are useful: round characters carry the heart of a story while flat characters help move it along. This worksheet builds the complexity axis of characterization.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. Section A has eight short character descriptions, and students label each one round or flat by how many sides the character is given. The reference box teaches round and flat with different examples, so the eight items stay independent of the model.

Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions, including describing a round character of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key. This worksheet is distinct from the Character Traits Worksheet (naming traits) and the How Characters Change Worksheet (the change axis).

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and contrast the round and flat examples.

Complete Section A on page 1 independently, labeling each character round or flat.

Discuss why a story cannot make every character round.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Character Traits Worksheet or the How Characters Change Worksheet.
