About this worksheet
A process is a set of steps you do in order to reach a result, like a recipe or directions. Writers use order words – first, next, then, after that, finally – to show the sequence, and reading them helps you follow the steps correctly. This worksheet helps students read procedural text and put mixed-up steps back in order.
Section A on page 1 gives the mixed-up steps of two short processes (planting a seed; making a sandwich) and asks students to write the step number that shows the correct order. The reference box teaches the idea with the steps for washing hands, which are not reused in any item.
Section B on page 2 asks students what a process is, to name order words, why order matters, and to write the steps for getting ready for school. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward sequencing and reading how-to text.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and number the hand-washing steps together.
Complete Section A independently – have students find the order words for each process.
Work Section B item 12 together: list the morning-routine steps in order.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B answers will vary.
