Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Ads are everywhere, and reading them with a critical eye is an essential media-literacy skill. This worksheet gives students a sample cereal advertisement and asks them to pull out the basics – the product, the price, the claims, the catchy words, and the fine print – and then to think about which claims are actually believable.

Section A asks 8 questions answered from the ad, including the product, cost, claim, number of vitamins, and the fine print. Section B adds three short responses that push students to spot a hard-to-prove claim, explain why ads use exciting words, and form an opinion about the product.

The reference box on page 1 explains the parts of an advertisement; the ad passage follows, with Section A on the same page. Section B is on page 2, and page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for Section A and sample responses for Section B.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box and the ad aloud, pointing out the claim, the catchy words, and the fine print.

Work Section A independently; have students underline the part of the ad that answers each question.

Move to Section B and discuss which claims an ad can and cannot really prove.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with the Persuasive Techniques Worksheet or Fact and Opinion Worksheet for more critical-reading practice.
