Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A news article reports real events, and its parts help readers find facts fast: the headline names the topic, the byline tells who wrote it, the dateline gives the place and date, the lead answers the 5 Ws, and the body adds details with the most important facts first. This worksheet renders a short, original news article so students practice reading a real report.

The reference box and the news article are on page 1. Section A on page 2 gives eight questions that send students back to the article to find the headline, byline, dateline, and the who, what, when, where, and why. The reference box teaches the parts, so the answers come from the article itself.

Section B on page 3 has four short-response questions about how headlines and leads work, plus a chance to write a headline. Page 4 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on nonfiction text features and main idea.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and point out each labeled part on the article.

Have students read the news article on page 1 silently.

Complete Section A on page 2 independently, returning to the article for each answer.

Discuss why the most important facts come first in a news report.
