Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Menus are one of the first kinds of real-world text children read on their own, and they are great practice for finding specific information fast. This worksheet gives students a sample cafe menu organized into Drinks, Main Dishes, and Desserts, then asks them to locate prices, compare items, and add up a couple of simple orders.
Section A asks 8 questions answered directly from the menu – the cost of an item, which section it is in, the most expensive dish, and a few quick combined totals. Section B adds three short-response questions, including planning an order within a $7.00 budget and explaining why menus use sections.
The reference box on page 1 explains how menus are organized; the menu passage follows, and Section A is on the same page. Section B short responses are on page 2, and page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for Section A and sample responses for Section B.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and the menu aloud, pointing out the three sections and the prices.
Work Section A independently; remind students to scan the menu for the exact item before answering.
Move to Section B and let students plan a $7.00 order, checking their addition.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the Reading a Schedule Worksheet or Key Details Worksheet for more information-finding practice.
