Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Reading a map is an everyday skill. A map shows places from above, and a few tools make it easy to read: a key (legend) explains the symbols, a compass rose shows north, south, east, and west, and a scale shows distance. This worksheet gives students a simple town map and practice using directions and a key.
Section A on page 1 shows a drawn town map of Greenville with location boxes, connecting streets, a compass rose, a river, a scale bar, and a key, plus eight questions, and students read the map to answer. The reference box teaches the map tools and shows a short Examples block, so the questions stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks students what a key tells you, why a compass rose helps, and to describe a route between two places. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on the other functional-text worksheets such as reading a diagram and reading a chart.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point to north, south, east, and west.
Complete Section A independently using the map and key.
Discuss how the compass rose helps you describe directions.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Reading a Diagram Worksheet or the Reading a Chart Worksheet.
